I'm not the biggest fan of Roger Moore's Bond. He made some good Bond films and I enjoy his witty one-liners (although not as much as Pierce Brosnan's snippets). I'm just not particularly fond of how ridiculously cheesy these older 70's and 80's Moore 007 films were. Yes, it's the whole point of the films to not take themselves as seriously, but I'm more of a fan of the realism in Brosnan and Craig's 007 films. I still enjoy Bond films for what they are, and don't really hate any of the EON films in the series (except for Diamonds are Forever...). For Your Eyes Only was decently enjoyable fun, and had a few moments that I particularly liked.
My favorite part would have to be the mountain climbing segment. Probably one of the most nail-biting parts of the film, this scene really helped build tension that was otherwise lacking after the opening credits scene. There's a few subtle references to such popular blockbusters of the time like Jaws and The Empire Strikes Back that are telltale signs that the writers really only wanted to make their Bond films adapt to whatever was popular at the time. Moonraker got an adaptation when it did because of the incredie popularity of the first Star Wars film, and it proved mildly successful. It's a good thing that Barbara Broccoli decided to take the series in its own direction instead of leeching off of the popularity of other franchises. The newer Bond films are proof that their originality is their strongest suit.
For what it's worth though, For Your Eyes Only is fairly fun. The series could've benefitted from bringing its own original story ideas to the table, but it is what it is. Moore's Bond sure liked to ski a lot- I wonder if the actor had anything to do with this? Perhaps we'll never know, but it wouldn't surprise me. Although not as good as The Spy Who Loved Me, it's fun while it lasts, and as good as the basest Bond film can be.
